Finding a Sense of Place Through Public Art

In 2025, Tynkertopia was awarded a Creative Flagstaff Art & Culture Grant to help children, youth, and families explore the rich and diverse world of public art in Flagstaff. Through this project, we aim to deepen community connections, inspire curiosity, and foster creativity by encouraging families to engage directly with the art that shapes our city’s identity.

Working in partnership with the City of Flagstaff’s Beautification and Public Art Commission (BPAC), we carefully selected ten unique public artworks that represent the spirit, history, and beauty of Flagstaff. These works span a range of styles, materials, and stories—from large-scale murals and sculptures to environmental installations that reflect our connection to the land and sky.

Each featured artwork serves as a gateway to learning—about art, culture, science, and place. Families are invited to visit each piece using an interactive map and GPS-enabled technology, unlocking videos, artist interviews, and creative prompts designed to spark meaningful conversations and hands-on activities.

Through this project, Tynkertopia continues its mission to inspire lifelong learning through creativity and inquiry, while helping families discover the artistry woven throughout the everyday spaces of our community. Finding a Sense of Place Through Public Art celebrates not only the artists who enrich Flagstaff’s landscape but also the children and parents who see their city—and themselves—through new eyes.
