

October 2023 Classes at Tynkertopia
Classes in October will meet for four weeks starting the week of October 2nd.
Descriptions of all classes, hours, age requirements, and class fees are listed below. We are excited to offer these STEAM learning opportunities to area children and youth. Please arrive at least five minutes before classes begin.

TUESDAY CLASSES
- Children’s Story Hour
- Dates: October 3, 10, 17, 24
- Time: 4:00 – 4:45 PM
- Class Fee: $30
- Intended Audience: Preschool Students
- Instructor: Dr. Alice Christie, Tynkertopia Founder and retired professor who taught children’s literature classes at ASU
- Description: Immerse yourself and your child/ren in wonderful children’s literature. Listen to Dr. Alice read a well-known children’s book followed by an arts and crafts and STEAM projects inspired by the book. All materials provided by Tynkertopia.
- Chess Club
- Dates: October 3, 10, 17, 24
- Time: 5 – 6 PM
- Class Fee: $30
- Intended Audience: Elementary School chess players
- Instructor: Alexis Nelson, Tynkertopia Youth Coordinator
- Description: Come improve your chess skills and enhance your love of chess by participating in our weekly Chess Club! All levels of experience welcomed. Chess boards and pieces provided by Tynkertopia.
WEDNESDAY CLASSES
- Lego Club
- Dates: October 4, 11, 18, 25
- Time: 4 – 5 PM
- Class Fee: $30
- Intended Audience: Kindergarten – 3rd Grade Students
- Instructor: Jack Green, Tynkertopia Junior Intern
- Description: LEGO Club helps kids enhance their engineering skills and creativity. This class will inspire participants’ imaginations and challenge their minds.
- Introduction to Art
- Dates: October 4, 11, 18, 25
- Time: 4 – 5 PM
- Class Fee: $40
- Intended Audience: 9 year old students and older
- Instructor: Alexis Nelson, Tynkertopia Youth Coordinator and Flagstaff Artist.
- Description: In this class, children will have different art projects each week with different subject matters, materials and techniques. Come and join if you want to learn more about art or just come and create with us! Please look at the age requirements before signing up.

- Coding for 2nd – 5th Grade Students
- Dates: October 4, 11, 18, 25
- Time: 5 – 6 PM
- Class Fee: $35
- Intended Audience: 2nd – 5th Grade Students
- Instructor: Josh Collier, Computer Programmer, and Tynkertopia Volunteer
- Description: Introduction to basic coding principles through gamified learning experiences using block-based coding languages consisting of text. Students should be able to read on grade level.
THURSDAY CLASSES
- Beginning Cooking
- Dates: October 5, 12, 19, 26
- Time: 4 – 5 PM
- Class Fee: $40
- Intended Audience: 1st – 6th Grade Students
- Instructor: Jenna Papai, Tynkertopia Director
- Description: During this class, we will prepare, cook, and eat a delicious and nutritious snack or mini meal. All materials and food provided by Tynkertopia.
- Introduction to Coding for Children Aged 4-6 Years
- Dates: October 5, 12, 19, 26
- Time: 4 – 5 PM
- Class Fee: $35
- Intended Audience: Children Aged 4-6 Years Old
- Instructor: NAU Ph.D. Students of Infomatics
- Description: Introduction to basic block coding principles using Code-A-Pillar, Code.org, and other hands-on and unplugged activities.
- Introductory Sewing for Adults
- Dates: October 5, 12, 19, 26
- Time: 6:30 – 8 PM
- Class Fee: $60
- Intended Audience: Adults
- Instructor: Katelyn Lambson, Fiber Artist
- Description: In this class, you will learn about the parts of a sewing machine and how to operate it, basic seaming, and seam finishes. We will be utilizing fat quarter sized fabric pieces for projects. If you want a specific print, bring your own, we will also have fabric available to use. We also have sewing machines available to use, but if you have your own sewing machine please bring it with you, as it is easier to learn skill on a machine you will be using often. All materials and sewing machines are available from Tynkertopia.
FRIDAY CLASSES
- Take Apart and Peek Inside
- Dates: Octover 6, 13, 20, 27
- Time: 4 – 5 PM
- Class Fee: $30
- Intended Audience: 2nd – 12th Grade Students
- Instructor: Ward Davis, Retired Engineer, and Tynkertopia Volunteer
- Description: Each week, participants will use the Tynkertopia workshop and tools to take apart computers, laptops, cell phones, hard drives, and a variety of other electronic devices to learn about how each device works. When possible, they will repair the device so it can be repurposed.
SATURDAY CLASSES
- Creative Movement for PK–K Students
- Dates: October 7, 14, 21, 28
- Time: 10:15 – 11:00 AM
- Class Fee: $25
- Intended Audience: Preschool through Kindergarten Students (Ages 3 – 6)
- Instructor: Jenna Papai, Tynkertopia Director
- Description: Explore movement and music while nurturing creativity and developing physical skill, grace and agility.
- Foundations of Dance
- Dates: October 7, 14, 21, 28
- Time: 11 AM – 12 PM
- Class Fee: $35
- Intended Audience: 1st – 5th grade students
- Instructor: Jenna Papai, Tynkertopia Director
- Description: In this class you will learn the basics of vocabulary, position, posture, musicality, and artistic expression that form the building blocks of virtually every type of dance from ballet to hip-hop.
- Introduction to Origami
- Dates: October 7, 14, 21, 28
- Time: 1:00 – 2:00 PM
- Class Fee: $35
- Intended Audience: 2nd – 6th Grade Students
- Instructor: Kyla Dryer, Tynkertopia Junior Intern
- Description: Explore the art of folding paper! Learn the basics of folding technique and reading diagrams. Depending on student experience level and interest, activities may include folding easy flowers and animals to more complex designs, including modular origami models. Along the way, students can experience basic geometry concepts through hands-on activity. All materials provided by Tynkertopia.
