January 2023 Classes at Tynkertopia

Classes meet for 1 hour for three weeks in January, beginning Tuesday, January 10. Descriptions of all classes and class fees are listed below. Call 928-326-3400 with any questions.

Please complete the registration form for each child who will be taking a Tynkertopia class.

We are excited to offer these STEAM learning opportunities to area children and youth. We reserve the right to cancel classes with less than 3 registrants.

Tynkertopia TUESDAY CLASSES

  • Beginning Cooking
    • Dates: January 10, 17, 24
    • Time: 3:30 – 4:30 PM
    • Class Fee: $30
    • Intended Audience: Elementary School  Students
    • Instructor:  Tynkertopia Staff
    • Description: During this class, we will prepare, cook, and eat a delicious and nutritious snack or mini-meal. All materials and food provided by Tynkertopia.
  • Introduction to Origami
    • Dates: January 10, 24, 31
    • Time: 3:30 – 4:30 PM
    • Class Fee: $30
    • Intended Audience: 2nd – 6th grade students
    • Instructor: Dr. Angela Yamauchi, Tynkertopia Program Coordinator
    • Description: Explore the art of folding paper! Learn the basics of folding technique and reading diagrams. Depending on student experience level and interest, activities may include folding easy flowers and animals to more complex designs, including modular origami models. Along the way, students can experience basic geometry concepts through hands-on activity. All materials provided by Tynkertopia.
  • Designing for 3D Printers 
    • Dates: January 10, 24, 31
    • Time: 4:30 – 5:30 PM
    • Class Fee: $35 (includes all materials for 3D printing)
    • Intended Audience: Upper Elementary through High School Students
    • Instructor: Dr. Angela Yamauchi, Tynkertopia Program Coordinator and Jack Green, Tynkertopia Junior Intern
    • Description: Learn to use introductory Computer Aided Design software to design 3D models. Learn the basics of 3D printing to print and test our models using Tynkertopia’s two 3D printers. All materials provided by Tynkertopia.

WEDNESDAY CLASSES

  • Beginning Ceramics
    • Dates: January 11, 18, 25
    • Time:  4:30 – 5:30 PM
    • Class Fee: $40
    • Intended Audience: 5 years old and up
    • Instructor:  Christine Golden who has been creating and teaching art for over 15 years, and displays art work at numerous galleries and exhibitions around the country. 
    • Description: Learn basic ceramic building methods including slab, coil, and pinch techniques. Winter and animal inspired craft projects will be taught. Each project will be bisque fired. Cold surface painting will be used to complete each project. All materials are provided by Tynkertopia.
  • Introduction to Acting and Improv
    • Dates: January 11, 18, 25
    • Time: 3:30 – 4:30 PM
    • Class Fee: $25
    • Intended Audience: 2nd – 6th grade students
    • Instructor: Jenna Papai, , Tynkertopia Director
    • Description: A fun introduction to the basics of stage presence, emotional expression, character creation, and improvisation for the stage.
  • Foundations of Dance
    • Dates: January 11, 18, 25
    • Time: 4:30 – 5:30 PM
    • Class Fee: $25
    • Intended Audience: 1st – 5th grade students
    • Instructor: Jenna Papai, Tynkertopia Director
    • Description: In this class you will learn the basics of vocabulary, position, posture, musicality, and artistic expression that form the building blocks of virtually every type of of Dance from Ballet to Hip-Hop.
  • Lego Club 
    • Dates: January 11, 18, 25
    • Time: 4:30 – 5:30
    • Class Fee: $25
    • Intended Audience: Elementary and Middle School Students
    • Instructor: Brenden Nielsen, Tynkertopia Neighborhood Youth Coordinator
    • Description: Building with LEGOs is a great way for kids of all ages to enhance their engineering skills and creativity. After each LEGO Club meeting, the creations will be taken apart so that they can be used to solve different challenges in the next LEGO Club meeting.

THURSDAY CLASSES

  • Introduction to Coding for Children Aged 4-6 Years
    • Dates: January 12, 19, 26
    • Time: 3:30 – 4:30 PM
    • Class Fee: $25
    • Intended Audience: Ages 4-6 years
    • Instructor: TBA
    • Description: Introduction to basic block coding principles using Code-A-Pillar, Code.org, and other hands-on and unplugged activities.
  • Coding for 2nd – 5th Grade Students
    • Dates: January 12, 19, 26
    • Time: 4:30 – 5:30 PM
    • Class Fee: $25
    • Intended Audience: 2nd – 5th grade students
    • Instructor: Josh Collier, Computer Programer and Tynkertopia Volunteer
    • Description: Introduction to basic coding principles through gamified learning experiences using block-based coding languages consisting of text.  Students should be able to read on grade level.

FRIDAY CLASSES

  • Take Apart and Peek Inside
    • Dates: January 13, 20, 27
    • Time: 3:30 – 4:30 PM
    • Class Fee: $25
    • Intended Audience: Curious elementary, middle, and high school students
    • Instructor: Ward Davis, Retired Engineer and Tynkertopia Volunteer
    • Description: Each week, participants will use the Tynkertopia workshop and tools to take apart computers, laptops, cell phones, hard drives, and a variety of other electronic devices to learn about how each device works. When possible, they will repair the device so it can be repurposed.
  • How Money Works
    • Dates: January 13, 20, 27
    • Time: 4:30 – 5:30 PM
    • Class Fee: $25
    • Intended Audience: Upper Elementary and Middle School Students
    • Instructor: Brenden Nielsen, Tynkertopia Neighborhood Youth Coordinator
    • Description: Would you like to learn more about money? This class is an introduction to financial literacy and basic money management. Learn how to begin saving for your future.
  • Children’s Story Hour
    • Dates: January 13, 20, 27
    • Time: 3:30 – 4:30 PM
    • Class Fee: $25
    • Intended Audience: Preschool through Kindergarden Students
    • Instructor: Dr. Alice Christie, Tynkertopia Executive Director
    • Description: Each week, participants will listen to Dr. Alice read several children’s books. Following the reading, children will engage in STEAM activities that relates to each week’s books.

SATURDAY CLASSES

    • Creative Movement for PK–K Students
      • Dates: January 14, 21, 28
      • Time: 10:15 – 11 AM
      • Class Fee: $20
      • Intended Audience: Preschool through Kindergarden Students
      • Instructor: Jenna Papai, , Tynkertopia Director
      • Description: Explore movement and music while nurturing creativity and developing physical skill, grace and agility.
    • Lego Club 
      • Dates: January 14, 21, 28
      • Time: 11 AM – Noon
      • Class Fee: $25
      • Intended Audience: Elementary and Middle School Students
      • Instructor: Brenden Nielsen, Tynkertopia Neighborhood Youth Coordinator

    • Learn to Knit
      • Dates: January 14, 21, 28

      • Intended Audience: Upper Elementary and Middle School Students, Adults

      • Description: Learn the basics of knitting. Create a mini-masterpiece using just knit and purl. All materials provided by Tynkertopia.
