November Classes at Tynkertopia

Most classes meet for 1 hour or 1.5 hours for 4 weeks in November, skipping Thanksgiving week. Descriptions of all classes and class fees are listed below. Call 928-326-3400 to inquire about scholarships.

Please complete the registration form for each child who will be taking a Tynkertopia class.

We are excited to offer these STEAM learning opportunities to area children and youth. We reserve the right to cancel classes with less than 3 registrants.

TUESDAY CLASSES

  • Beginning Cooking: Creating Healthy Snacks
    • Dates: November 1, 8, 15 (Note: This is a three-week class)
    • Time: 3:30 – 4:30 PM
    • Class Fee: $35
    • Intended Audience: Elementary School  Students
    • Instructor:  Christy Stuth, U of A Associate Agent of Family Consumer Health Sciences
    • Description: During this 3-week class, we will review food safety and the safe handling of kitchen equipment (peelers, knives), while preparing easy and nutritious snacks. All materials and food provided by Tynkertopia.
  • Chinese Calligraphy
    • Dates: November 1, 8, 15, 29
    • Time: 3.30 – 4.30 PM
    • Class Fee: $35
    • Intended Audience: Upper Elementary and Middle School Students, and Adults
    • Instructor: Tiantian Feng, Ph.D. candidate at NAU and K-12 teacher educator in China
    • Description: You will learn the fundamentals of Chinese calligraphy art, including its history, materials, basic strokes, and simple characters. Final project is a tailored piece of blessings writing. All materials provided by Tynkertopia.
  • Learn to Knit
    • Dates: November 1, 8, 15, 29
    • Time: 4:30 – 5:15 PM
    • Class Fee: $30
    • Intended Audience: Upper Elementary and Middle School Students, Adults
    • Instructor: Dr. Alice Christie, Tynkertopia Executive Director
    • Description: Learn the basics of knitting. Create a mini-masterpiece using just knit and purl. All materials provided by Tynkertopia.

WEDNESDAY CLASSES

  • Sewing
    • Dates: November 2, 9, 16 (Note: This is a three-week class)
    • Time: 1:45 – 3:15 PM
    • Class Fee: $40
    • Intended Audience: Upper Elementary and Middle School Students, Adults
    • Instructor: Angela Price, Seamstress and Tynkertopia Volunteer
    • Description: Are you interested in learning to improve your sewing machine skills? Join our three-week class and create a sewing work of art. Sewing machines, fabric, and thread provided! Just bring your curiosity and imagination.
  • Creative Crafts
      • Dates: November 2, 9, 16 (Note: This is a three-week class)
      • Time: 3:30 – 4:15 PM
      • Class Fee: $25
      • Intended Audience: Elementary and Middle School Students
      • Instructor: Angela Price, Seamstress and Tynkertopia Volunteer, and Eileen Altman, Tynkertopia Volunteer
      • Description: Each week you will used new and recycled matrerials to create craft projects including a tie-dyed T-Shirts (bring your own white T-Shirt), a jewelry project, and a surprise project.
  • Beginning Ceramics
    • Dates: November 2, 9, 16, 30
    • Time:  4:30 – 5:30 PM
    • Class Fee: $35
    • Intended Audience: 5 years old and up
    • Instructor:  Christine Golden who has been creating and teaching art for over 15 years, and displays art work at numerous galleries and exhibitions around the country. 
    • Description: Learn basic ceramic building methods including slab, coil, and pinch techniques. Fall inspired craft projects will be taught and each project will be bisque fired. Cold surface painting will be used to complete each project. All materials will be provided by Tynkertopia.
  • Foundations of Dance
    • Dates: November 2, 9, 16, 30
    • Time: 3:30 – 4:30 PM
    • Class Fee: $30
    • Intended Audience: 1st – 5th grade students
    • Instructor: Jenna Papai, Tynkertopia STEAM Education Coordinator
    • Description: In this class you will learn the basics of vocabulary, position, posture, musicality, and artistic expression that form the building blocks of virtually every type of of Dance from Ballet to Hip-Hop.
  • Introduction to Acting and Improv
    • Dates: November 2, 9, 16, 30
    • Time: 4:30 – 5:30 PM
    • Class Fee: $30
    • Intended Audience: 2nd – 6th grade students
    • Instructor: Jenna Papai, , Tynkertopia STEAM Education Coordinator
    • Description: A fun introduction to the basics of stage presence, emotional expression, character creation, and improvisation for the stage.

THURSDAY CLASSES

  • Introduction to Coding for Children Aged 4-6 Years
    • Dates: November 3, 10, 17, and December 1
    • Time: 3:30 – 4:30 PM
    • Class Fee: $30
    • Intended Audience: Ages 4-6 years
    • Instructor: TBA
    • Description: Introduction to basic block coding principles using Code-A-Pillar, Code.org, and other hands-on and unplugged activities.
  • Coding for 2nd – 5th Grade Students
    • Dates: November 3, 10, 17, and December 1
    • Time: 4:30 – 5:30 PM
    • Class Fee: $30
    • Intended Audience: 2nd – 5th grade students
    • Instructor: Josh Collier, Computer Programer and Tynkertopia Volunteer
    • Description: Introduction to basic coding principles through gamified learning experiences using block-based coding languages
      consisting of text.  Students should be able to read on grade level.
  • Engineering with Paper
    • Dates: November 3, 10, 17, and December 1
    • Time: 4:30 – 5:30 PM
    • Class Fee: $35
    • Intended Audience: 2nd – 6th grade students
    • Instructor: Dr. Angela Yamauchi, Tynkertopia Program Coordinator
    • Description: Engage in hands-on building and use simple materials made of paperand cardboard to create paper projects and explore engineering challenges. All materials provided by Tynkertopia.

FRIDAY CLASSES

  • Take Apart and Peek Inside
    • Dates: November 4, 11, 18, and December 2
    • Time: 3:30 – 4:30 PM
    • Class Fee: $30
    • Intended Audience: Curious elementary, middle, and high school students
    • Instructor: Ward Davis, Retired Engineer and Tynkertopia Volunteer
    • Description: Each week, participants will use the Tynkertopia workshop and tools to take apart computers, laptops, cell phones, hard drives, and a variety of other electronic devices to learn about how each device works. When possible, they will repair the device so it can be repurposed.
  • Art with Dr. Angela
    • Dates: November 4, 11, 18, and December 2
    • Time: 4:30 – 5:30 PM
    • Class Fee: $35
    • Intended Audience: All
    • Instructor: Dr. Angela Yamauchi, Tynkertopia Program Coordinator
    • Description: Each week, participants will learn about famous artists and have fun emulating their styles. Examples may include Vincent Van Gogh, Georges Seurat, Piet Mondrian, Henri Matisse, Jackson Pollock, Georgia O’Keefe, and Yayoi Kusama. All materials supplied by Tynkertopia.

SATURDAY CLASSES

    • Creative Movement for PK–K Students
      • Dates: November 5, 12, 19, and December 3
      • Time: 10:15 – 11 AM
      • Class Fee: $25
      • Intended Audience: Preschool through Kindergarden Students
      • Instructor: Jenna Papai, , Tynkertopia STEAM Education Coordinator
      • Description: Explore movement and music while nurturing creativity and developing physical skill, grace and agility.
    • Lego Club 
      • Dates: November 5, 12, 19, and December 3
      • Time: 11 AM – Noon
      • Class Fee: $30
      • Intended Audience: Elementary and Middle School Students
      • Instructor: Dexter Wolf, Tynkertopia Junior Intern
      • Description: Building with LEGOs is a great way for kids of all ages to enhance their engineering skills and creativity. After each LEGO Club meeting, the creations will be taken apart so that they can be used to solve different challenges in the next LEGO Club meeting.
    • Lego Robotics 
      • Dates: November 5, 12, 19, and December 3
      • Time: Noon – 1 PM
      • Class Fee: $30
      • Intended Audience: Upper Elementary and Middle School Students
      • Instructor: Dexter Wolf, Tynkertopia Junior Intern

    • Designing for 3D Printers 
      • Dates: November 5, 12, 19, and December 3
      • Time: 1 – 2 PM
      • Class Fee: $35 (includes all materials for 3D printing)
      • Intended Audience: Upper Elementary through High School Students
      • Instructor: Dr. Angela Yamauchi, Tynkertopia Program Coordinator and Jack Green, Tynkertopia Junior Intern
      • Description: Learn to use introductory Computer Aided Design software to design 3D models. Learn the basics of 3D printing to print and test our models using Tynkertopia’s two 3D printers.
