January 2024 Classes at Tynkertopia

Classes in January will meet for four weeks starting the week of January 8th.

Descriptions of all classes, hours, age requirements, and class fees are listed below.  We are excited to offer these STEAM learning opportunities to area children and youth. Please arrive at least five minutes before classes begin.

We reserve the right to cancel classes with less than 3 registrants.

TUESDAY CLASSES

  • Chess Club
    • Dates: January 9, 16, 23, 30
    • Time: 5 – 6 PM
    • Class Fee: $25
    • Intended Audience: Elementary and Middle School chess players
    • Instructor: Alexis Nelson, Tynkertopia Youth Coordinator
    • Description: Come improve your chess skills and enhance your love of chess by participating in our weekly Chess Club! All levels of experience welcomed. Chess boards and pieces provided by Tynkertopia.
  • Sewing for Adults (with a bit of experience)
    • Dates: January 9, 16, 23, 30
    • Time: 6 – 8 PM
    • Class Fee: $60
    • Intended Audience: Beginning sewers with some experience
    • Instructor: Katelyn Lambson, Tynkertopia Volunteer and Experienced Fiber Artist
    • Description: Come and sew with a fun group of adults, and learn new skills, and complete projects you have been hoping to try out! If you have any projects on your list, bring them along and learn as you go, or just come and sew with some in house project ideas.  All materials and sewing machines are available from Tynkertopia.

WEDNESDAY CLASSES

  • Beginning Cooking
    • Dates: January 10, 17, 24, 31
    • Time: 4 – 5 PM
    • Class Fee: $40
    • Intended Audience: 1st – 6th Grade Students
    • Instructor: Jenna Papai, Tynkertopia Director
    • Description: During this class, we will prepare, cook, and eat a delicious and nutritious snack or mini meal. All materials and food provided by Tynkertopia.
  • Hand Sew Your Own Stuffed Animal
    • Dates: January 10, 17, 24, 31
    • Time: 4 – 5 PM
    • Class Fee: $40
    • Intended Audience: 
    • Instructor: Katelyn Lambson, Tynkertopia Volunteer and Experienced Fiber Artist
    • Description: Come learn how to hand sew your own stuffed animal.  We will be learning how to sew on buttons, basic embroidery stitching, and basic hand sewing stitches to complete your own stuffed animal  by the end of the class. All materials provided by Tynkertopia.
  • Lego Club 
    • Dates: January 10, 17, 24, 31
    • Time: 5 – 6 PM
    • Class Fee: $25
    • Intended Audience: Kindergarten – 3rd Grade Students
    • Instructor: Jack Green, Tynkertopia Junior Intern
    • Description: LEGO Club helps kids enhance their engineering skills and creativity. This class will inspire participants’ imaginations and challenge their minds.

THURSDAY CLASSES

  • Introduction to Art
    • Dates: January 11, 18, 25, February 1
    • Time: 4 – 5 PM
    • Class Fee: $40
    • Intended Audience: 9 year old students and older
    • Instructor: Alexis Nelson, Tynkertopia Youth Coordinator and Flagstaff Artist.
    • Description: In this class, children will have different art projects each week with different subject matters, materials and techniques. Come and join if you want to learn more about art or just come and create with us! Please look at the age requirements before signing up. All materials provided by Tynkertopia.
  • Introduction to Coding for Children Aged 4-6 Years
    • Dates: January 11, 18, 25, February 1
    • Time: 4 – 5  PM
    • Class Fee: $35
    • Intended Audience: Children Aged 4-6 Years Old
    • Instructor: NAU Ph.D. Students of Infomatics
    • Description: Introduction to basic block coding principles using Code-A-Pillar, Code.org, and other hands-on and unplugged activities.
  • Building and Testing Rube Goldberg Machines
    • Dates: January 11, 18, 25, February 1
    • Time: 5 – 6  PM
    • Class Fee: $40
    • Intended Audience: Children Aged 7 Years and Older
    • Instructor: Dr. Alice Christie, Tynkertopia Founder and CEO
    • Description: This class provides the ultimate “tynkering” experience! Using household goods and a myriad of materials available at Tynkertopia, students will create and test a new Rube Goldberg Machine each week. We’ll learn about simple machines and incorporate one or more simple machines in our Rube Goldberg Machines.

FRIDAY CLASSES

  • Take Apart and Peek Inside
    • Dates: January 12, 19, 26, February 2
    • Time: 4 – 5 PM
    • Class Fee: $30
    • Intended Audience: 2nd – 12th Grade Students
    • Instructor: Ward Davis, Retired Engineer, and Tynkertopia Volunteer
    • Description: Each week, participants will use the Tynkertopia workshop and tools to take apart computers, laptops, cell phones, hard drives, and a variety of other electronic devices to learn about how each device works. When possible, they will repair the device so it can be repurposed.
  • Coding for 2nd – 5th Grade Students
    • Dates: January 12, 19, 26, February 2
    • Time: 5 – 6 PM
    • Class Fee: $35
    • Intended Audience: 2nd – 5th Grade Students
    • Instructor: Josh Collier, Computer Programmer, and Tynkertopia Volunteer
    • Description: Introduction to basic coding principles through gamified learning experiences using block-based coding languages consisting of text.  Students should be able to read on grade level.

SATURDAY CLASSES

      • Creative Movement for PK–K Students
        • Dates: January 13, 20, 27, February 3
        • Time: 10:15 – 11:00 AM
        • Class Fee: $25
        • Intended Audience: Preschool through Kindergarten Students (Ages 3 – 6)
        • Instructor: Jenna Papai, Tynkertopia Director
        • Description: Explore movement and music while nurturing creativity and developing physical skill, grace and agility.
      • Intoduction to Acting and Improv
        • Dates: January 13, 20, 27, February 3
        • Time: 11 AM – 12 PM
        • Class Fee: $35
        • Intended Audience: 2nd – 6th Grade Students
        • Instructor: Jenna Papai, Tynkertopia Director
        • Description: A fun introduction to the basics of stage presence, emotional expression, character creation, and improvisation for the stage.
