

July Classes at Tynkertopia
All classes meet for 1 hour for 4 consecutive weeks. Descriptions of all classes and class fees are listed below. Call 928-326-3400 to inquire about scholarships. In-person payment occurs during the first class. We are excited to offer these STEAM learning opportunities.

TUESDAY CLASSES
- Introduction to Coding (Ages 4-6 years)
- Dates: July 5, 12, 19, 26
- Time: 1 – 2 PM
- Class Fee: $30
- Intended Audience: Ages 4-6 years
- Instructor: Dr. Alice Christie, Tynkertopia Executive Director
- Description: Introduction to basic block coding principles using Code-A-Pillar, Code.org, and other hands-on activities.
- Foundations of Dance
- Dates: July 5, 12, 19, 26
- Time: 3 – 4 PM
- Class Fee: $30
- Intended Audience: 1st – 5th grade students
- Instructor: Jenna Papai
- Description: In this class you will learn the basics of vocabulary, position, posture, musicality, and artistic expression that form the building blocks of virtually every type of of Dance from Ballet to Hip-Hop
- Introduction to Acting and Improv

- Intended Audience: 2nd – 6th grade students
- Instructor: Jenna Papai
- Description: A fun introduction to the basics of stage presence, emotional expression, character creation, and improvisation for the stage.
WEDNESDAY CLASSES
- Introduction to Gardening
- Dates: July 6, 13, 20, 27
- Time: 3 – 4 PM
- Class Fee: $30
- Intended Audience: Elementary and Middle School Students
- Instructor: Dr. Alice Christie and Tynkertopia Staff
- Description: Tynkertopia is building its Community Garden this spring. Each child who completes this class will be given a 4′ x 4′ raised garden bed to grow vegetables throughout the spring, summer, and early fall. This class will help kids become more sensitive to their environment, develop fine motor skills, explore biology and science, develop a hobby – all while learning the basics of gardening.
- Think Like an Engineer
- Dates: July 6, 13, 20, 27
- Time: 4 – 5 PM
- Class Fee: $30
- Intended Audience: 2nd-5th grade students
- Instructors: David Hendershott, Tynkertopia Director
- Description: In this class, 2nd-5th grade students will explore the importance of Engineering in real life contexts. Students will engage in numerous hands-on activities, including Kiwi Kits, that develop engineering skills.
THURSDAY CLASSES
- How to Build a Tynkering Mindset

- Intended Audience: Parents or guardians AND their children ages 2.5 to 5 years
- Instructors: Dr. Alice Christie, Tynkertopia Executive Director
- Description: Tynkertopia welcomes parents or guardians with their preschoolers for a four-week learning series. Nurturing curiosity is a key to lifelong learning. We will explore why play is the best way for young children (and most of us) to learn and how everyday home items and recyclables can spark creativity. We’ll brainstorm open-ended questions that encourage creative thinking for young minds, and showcase quality age-appropriate books that spark the imagination of young minds.

- Intended Audience: Elementary and Middle School Students

- Description: Building with LEGOs is a great way for kids of all ages to enhance their engineering skills and creativity. After each LEGO Club meeting, the creations will be taken apart so that they can be used to solve different challenges in the next LEGO Club meeting.
- Lego Robotics
- Dates: July 7, 14, 21, 28
- Time: 4 – 5 PM

- Intended Audience: Upper Elementary and Middle School Students
- Instructor: David Hendershott, Tynkertopia Director

FRIDAY CLASS
- Learn to Knit
- Dates: July 8, 15, 22, 29

- Intended Audience: Upper Elementary and Middle School Students, Adults

- Description: Learn the basics of knitting. Create a mini-masterpiece using just knit and purl. All materials provided by Tynkertopia.
SATURDAY CLASSES
- Get Ready to Film: Introduction to Movie Making
- Dates: July 9, 16, 23, 30
- Time: 10 – 11 AM
- Class Fee: $30
- Intended Audience: Upper Elementary and Middle School Students
- Instructor: Dr. Alice Christie, Tynkertopia Executive Director
- Description: Learn how to capture great movie footage and sound at home using tablets, phones and/or digital cameras. No prior experience necessary.
- Designing for 3D Printers
- Dates: July 9, 16, 23, 30
- Time: 12 – 1 PM
- Class Fee: $40 (includes all materials for 3D printing)
- Intended Audience: Upper Elementary through High School Students
- Instructor: David Hendershott, Tynkertopia Director
- Description: Learn to use introductory Computer Aided Design software to design 3D models. Learn the basics of 3D printing to print and test our models using Tynkertopia’s two 3D printers.
- Learn to Draw: Visual Art and Science
- Dates: July 9, 16, 23, 30
- Time: 1 – 2 PM
- Class Fee: $30
- Intended Audience: 2nd – 5th grade students
- Instructor: Angela Yamauchi, Ph.D.
- Description: Practice basic drawing and painting, while learning about the art and science of perspective and color. While most of our time will be spent making mini masterpieces, we will also explore how we see colors, learn about the color wheel, and get creative with ink chromatography
