April Classes at Tynkertopia

All classes meet for 1  or 1.5 hours for 4 consecutive weeks. Descriptions of all classes and class fees are listed below. Call 928-326-3400 to inquire about scholarships. In-person payment occurs during the first class. We are excited to offer these STEAM learning opportunities.

TUESDAY CLASSES

  • Explore Science and Art with Author/Illustrator Eric Carle
    • Dates: April 5, 12, 19, 26
    • Time: 2 – 3 PM
    • Class Fee: $30
    • Intended Audience: Preschool to Early Elementary School Students
    • Instructor: Dr. Alice Christie
    • Description: Learn about colors, numbers, animals, insects, the human body, and more as we read and learn from Eric Carle’s award-winning books. After reading each book, kids will engage in hands-on puzzles, art activities, and science-based activities designed to help kids understand the world around them.

  • Introduction to Gardening
    • Dates: April 5, 12, 19, 26
    • Time: 4 – 5 PM
    • Class Fee: $30
    • Intended Audience: Elementary and Middle School Students
    • Instructor: Dr. Alice Christie and Tynkertopia Staff
    • Description: Tynkertopia is building its Community Garden this spring. Each child who completes this class will be given a 4′ x 4′ raised garden bed to grow vegetables throughout the spring, summer, and early fall. This class will help kids become more sensitive to their environment, develop fine motor skills, explore biology and science, develop a hobby – all while learning the basics of gardening.

  • Take Apart and Peek Inside
    • Dates: April 5, 12, 19, 26
    • Time: 4 – 5 PM
    • Class Fee: $30
    • Intended Audience: Curious elementary, middle, and high school students
    • Instructor: Ward Davis
    • Description: Each week, participants will use the Tynkertopia workshop and tools to take apart computers, laptops, cell phones, hard drives, and a variety of other electronic devices to learn about how each device works. When possible, they will repair the device so it can be repurposed.

  • Coding with Javascript
    • Dates: April 5, 12, 19, 26
    • Time: 5 – 6 PM
    • Class Fee: $30
    • Intended Audience: Elementary through High School Students with prior coding expeerience
    • Instructor: David Hendershott
    • Description: Learn the basic principles and terminology used in computer programming as an introduction to text-based coding using the JavaScript language.

    WEDNESDAY CLASSES

    • Children’s Literature Hour
      • Dates: April 6, 13, 20, 27
      • Time: 1 – 2 PM
      • Class Fee: $30
      • Intended Audience: Preschool – Elementary School Students
      • Instructor:  Dr. Alice Christie, Tynkertopia Founder and retired professor who taught children’s literature classes at ASU
      • Description: Immerse yourself in children’s literature. Listen to Dr. Alice read a well-known children’s book followed by arts and crafts projects inspired by that book.

    • Spring Crafts with Erica
      • Dates: April 6, 13, 20, 27
      • Time: 2:30 – 3:30 PM
      • Class Fee: $30
      • Intended Audience: Elementary School Students
      • Instructor: Erica Martin
      • Description: Let your creativity run wild. Come and learn fun, creative crafts that you can use to brighten your day!
    • Foundations of Dance
      • Dates: April 6, 13, 20, 27
      • Time: 4 – 5 PM
      • Class Fee: $30
      • Intended Audience: 1st – 6th grade students
      • Instructor: Jenna Papai
      • Description: In this class you will learn the basics of vocabulary, position, posture, musicality, and artistic expression that form the building blocks of virtually every type of of Dance from Ballet to Hip-Hop
    • Introduction to Acting and Improv
      • Dates: April 6, 13, 20, 27
      • Time: 5 – 6 PM
      • Class Fee: $30
      • Intended Audience: 2nd – 6th grade students
      • Instructor: Jenna Papai
      • Description: A fun introduction to the basics of stage presence, emotional expression, character creation, and improvisation for the stage.

      THURSDAY CLASSES

      • How to Build a Tynkering Mindset
          • Dates: April 7, 14, 21, 28
          • Time: 11 AM – Noon
          • Class Fee: $30
          • Intended Audience: Parents or guardians AND their children ages 2.5 to 5 years
          • Instructors: Rene RedDay and Dr. Alice Christie
          • Description: Tynkertopia welcomes parents or guardians with their preschoolers on Thursdays in April from 11 AM – Noon for a four-week learning series. We know nurturing curiosity is a key to lifelong learning. We will explore why play is the best way for young children (and most of us) to learn and how everyday home items and recyclables can spark creativity. We’ll brainstorm open-ended questions that encourage creative thinking for young minds, and showcase quality age-appropriate books that spark the imagination of young minds. Finally, we will close the series with a family “tynker” session, showcase your children’s creations, and reflect on our collective ah-has from the four-week interactive series.

      • Learn to Sew
        • Dates: April 7, 14, 21, 28
        • Time: 4 – 5:30 PM
        • Class Fee: $40
        • Intended Audience: Elementary and Middle School Students
        • Instructor: Angela Price
        • Description: Are you interested in learning to use a sewing machine. Join our four-week class to learn the basics of sewing on a sewing machine. Sewing machines, fabric, and thread provided! Just bring your curiosity and imagination.

      • Lego Club 
        • Dates: April 7, 14, 21, 28
        • Time: 5 – 6 PM
        • Class Fee: $30
        • Intended Audience: Elementary and Middle School Students
        • Instructor: David Hendershott
        • Description: Building with LEGOs is a great way for kids of all ages to enhance their engineering skills and creativity. After each LEGO Club meeting, the creations will be taken apart so that they can be used to solve different challenges in the next LEGO Club meeting.

      FRIDAY CLASSES

      • Explorations in STEAM
        • Dates: April 8, 15, 22, 29
        • Time: 4 – 5 PM
        • Class Fee: $30
        • Intended Audience: 2nd-5th grade students
        • Instructors: Emily Halter, NAU College of Education Intern and Dr. Alice Christie, Tynkertopia Founder
        • Description: In this class, 2nd-5th grade students will explore the importance of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics in real life contexts. Students will engage in numerous hands-on activities that develop STEAM skills.

      • Designing for 3D Printers 
        • Dates: April 8, 15, 22, 29
        • Time: 5 – 6 PM
        • Class Fee: $40 (includes all materials for 3D printing)
        • Intended Audience: Upper Elementary through High School Students
        • Instructor: David Hendershott
        • Description: Learn to use introductory Computer Aided Design software to design 3D models. Learn the basics of 3D printing to print and test our models using Tynkertopia’s two 3D printers.

        SATURDAY CLASSES

          • Coding for 2nd – 5th grade students
            • Dates: April 9, 16, 23, 30
            • Time: 9 – 10 AM
            • Class Fee: $30
            • Intended Audience: 2nd – 5th Grade Students
            • Instructor: David Hendershott
            • Description: Introduction to basic coding principles through gamified learning experiences using block-based coding languages consisting of text.  Students should be able to read at a beginner level.
