April 2024 Classes and Clubs at Tynkertopia

April classes will meet for four weeks starting the week of April 1, except for Introduction to Gardening, which starts on March 30.

Descriptions of all classes, hours, age requirements, and class fees are listed below.  We are excited to offer these STEAM learning opportunities to area children, youth and adults. Please arrive at least five minutes before classes begin.

We reserve the right to cancel classes with less than 3 registrants.

TUESDAY CLASSES

  • Introduction to Coding for Children Aged 4-6 Years
    • Dates: April 2, 9, 16, 23
    • Time: 4 – 5  PM
    • Class Fee: $35
    • Intended Audience: Children Aged 4-6 Years Old
    • Instructor: NAU Ph.D. Students of Infomatics and Dr. Alice Christie, Tynkertopia Founder
    • Description: Introduction to basic block coding principles using Code-A-Pillar, Code.org, and other hands-on and unplugged activities.
  • Creative Paper Crafts
    • Dates: April 2, 9, 16, 23
    • Time: 4 – 5 PM
    • Class Fee: $35
    • Intended Audience: 1st – 5th Grade Students
    • Instructor: Anna Begay, Tynkertopia Employee
    • Description: There are numerous ways you can use paper to create unique projects. Bring your imaginiation and creativity to this class where you’ll create a paper maché project, a garden planter, and a paper puzzle.

WEDNESDAY CLASSES

  • Hand Sew Your Own Stuffed Animal
    • Dates: April 3, 10, 17, 24
    • Time: 4 – 5 PM
    • Class Fee: $40
    • Intended Audience: 1st – 6th grade students and adults.
    • Instructor: Katelyn Lambson, Tynkertopia Volunteer and Experienced Fiber Artist
    • Description: Come learn how to hand sew your own stuffed animal.  We will be learning how to sew on buttons, basic embroidery stitching, and basic hand sewing stitches to complete your own stuffed animal  by the end of the class. All materials provided by Tynkertopia.
  • Introduction to Henna Tattoos
    • Dates: April 3, 10, 17, 24
    • Time: 5 – 6 PM
    • Class Fee: $40
    • Intended Audience: Age 12 through adults
    • Instructor: Zoe Cornelius, Tynkertopia Volunteer
    • Description: Learn how to make beautiful temporary tattoos with Henna! Participants will learn techniques for creating designs on both paper and skin, and will get to take home their own henna cones to practice with. All materials provided by Tynkertopia. Note: If individuals have had allergic reactions to either lavender or cajeput oil in the past or are sensitive to their strong smells, this class may not be a good fit for you.

THURSDAY CLASSES

  • Beginning Cooking
    • Dates: April 4, 11, 18, 25
    • Time: 4 – 5 PM
    • Class Fee: $40
    • Intended Audience: 1st – 6th Grade Students
    • Instructor: Jenna Papai, Tynkertopia Director
    • Description: During this class, we will prepare, cook, and eat a delicious and nutritious snack or mini meal. All materials and food provided by Tynkertopia.
  • Introduction to Lego Robotics
    • Dates: April 4, 11, 18, 25
    • Time: 4 – 5 PM
    • Class Fee: $40
    • Intended Audience: 3rd – 6th Grade Students
    • Instructor: Tommi Drum, Tynkertopia Parent and Volunteer
    • Description: During this class, participants will build confidence and critical thinking with Lego Spike through while solving collaborating witt others to solve Lego robotic challenges. All materials provided by Tynkertopia.
  • Coding for 2nd – 5th Grade Students
    • Dates: April 4, 11, 18, 25
    • Time: 5 – 6 PM
    • Class Fee: $35
    • Intended Audience: 2nd – 5th Grade Students
    • Instructor: Josh Collier, Computer Programmer, and Tynkertopia Volunteer
    • Description: Introduction to basic coding principles through gamified learning experiences using block-based coding languages consisting of text.  Students should be able to read on grade level.

FRIDAY CLASSES

  • Take Apart and Peek Inside
    • Dates: April 5, 12, 19, 26
    • Time: 4 – 5 PM
    • Class Fee: $30
    • Intended Audience: 2nd – 12th Grade Students
    • Instructor: Ward Davis, Retired Engineer, and Tynkertopia Volunteer
    • Description: Each week, participants will use the Tynkertopia workshop and tools to take apart computers, laptops, cell phones, hard drives, and a variety of other electronic devices to learn about how each device works. When possible, they will repair the device so it can be repurposed.
  •  Earth Friendly Crafts
    • Dates: April 5, 12, 19, 26
    • Time: 4 – 5 PM
    • Class Fee: $35
    • Intended Audience: Ages 7-12
    • Instructor: Carol Covington, Tynkertopia Volunteer
    • Description: In this class, participants will create a variety of art projects using natural materials that develop an awareness of the environment and encourage a caring attitude towards the earth.

SATURDAY CLASSES

      • Creative Movement for PK–K Students
        • Dates: April 6, 13 (Two weeks only)
        • Time: 10:15 – 11:00 AM
        • Class Fee: $15
        • Intended Audience: Preschool through Kindergarten Students (Ages 3 – 6)
        • Instructor: Jenna Papai, Tynkertopia Director
        • Description: Explore movement and music while nurturing creativity and developing physical skill, grace and agility.
      • Intoduction to Acting and Improv
        • Dates: April 6, 13 (Two weeks only)
        • Time: 11 AM – 12 PM
        • Class Fee: $20
        • Intended Audience: 2nd – 6th Grade Students
        • Instructor: Jenna Papai, Tynkertopia Director
        • Description: A fun introduction to the basics of stage presence, emotional expression, character creation, and improvisation for the stage.
      • Introduction to Gardening
        • Dates: March 30, April 6, 13, and 27 (Note: First class is March 30 and we skip April 20)
        • Time: 1 – 2 PM
        • Class Fee: $40
        • Intended Audience: 1st – 6th Grade Students
        • Instructor: Dr. Alice Christie, Tynkertopia Founder, and Flagstaff Gardener
        • Description: In this class, children will learn the basics of gardening and composting. We will plant seeds inside to transplant to the Tynkertopia Community Garden later in the spring. This class will help kids become more sensitive to their environment, develop fine motor skills, explore biology and science, develop a hobby – all while learning the basics of gardening. All soil, compost, garden beds, and seeds are provided by Tynkertopia.
